the latest in the lois-gets-her-art-stolen chronicles: a chilean publisher has decided to take this artwork, drag it through photoshop hell, and use it as a cover for this book, obviously without permission or compensation of any kind. not only is it copyright infringement but making book covers this ugly should be outlawed too.

anyways, i went through this before when i found my art printed on sweaters in south korea. i talked to a few different lawyers at the time, who told me that i needed a lawyer in the actual country that the theft was taking place.

The thief is Puerto de Escape in Chile (a publisher) and i intend to go after them. however, i need someone who is familiar with chilean law and ideally could hook me up with a lawyer in chile to help me out and give advice. i could also use advice from anyone familiar with these situations and how they can be resolved. if you guys could spread the word and e-mail me at loishh@gmail.com with any information, that would help me SO much! thanks a ton for reading!!

Here’s a (blank) example of the invoice that I use after I finish a freelance project.

It’s pretty common that I see a lot of freelance illustrators, designers, and photographers use something that looks like it was pulled from a base template in MS Word — your bank statements are probably nicer to look at. Functional, they may be, but I think invoices, (just like your resume,) are another place to express yourself visually to your clients, and may just be a cherry on top to a lasting impression.

I don’t think an invoice has to be over-the-top, and you usually don’t want to include images or textures because if your client prints it out, chances are more than not it will be from a black and white laser printer — so if you use colors in your formatting, they have to still be perfectly readable in grayscale. A background texture that may ordinarily be readable in color can make text illegible in gray.

What I think is most important is to visually distinguish your invoices as being important documentation, or very obviously “I AM AN INVOICE.” Something that makes things easy for your client to 1) not lose track of it and 2) more easily find YOUR invoice since it doesn’t look like the mounds of others they may have on the virtual table. (For all I know, these are probably not even real problems — but I like to help out any minor way I can.

Remember to include stuff like an invoice ID number, both in the file and in the file name. Something unique, (like a date, like 121107,) that they can toss to you in case any mention of an invoice has to come up, both parties will know exactly which one is being referenced.

My design for ESTIMATES are the same as this one, except they’re blue, and the bar on the side is solid — not striped. On my estimate is where I list all of my terms and conditions, such as all work performed will have to be paid, additional rates based on certain other tasks, etc, all that.

Lastly, be sure to have a “THANK YOU / FOR YOUR BUSINESS” on there somewhere. You want your invoice to seem like something positive by the end of it, not a bill for utilities.

I do all of my layout design like this in Adobe InDesign. But you can easily do this same kind of stuff in MS Word, Apple Pages, hell even Google Docs — and that’s free!

that’s it! you can do it per channel to get cool color tear effects, and once you’re done you can use things like lens blur with a bit of noise and specular highlighting to get a more organic effect. i’ve seen other glitch / screenshot / VHS-effect tutorials and none of them have looked even remotely organic to me, so have this!

It’s all change! First all we are sorry it took so long to get back to you guys, we have been figuring out this change over the last week. So, what’s going down?

First off, scrap the Empire list! As myself and Leanne (my partner in crime and girlfriend) went though the list she found a lot of it off putting and wanted to sit it out. The founding point of this club was for me and her to sit and watch films together so to do it without her seemed madness! Also, I rapidly found there was a bunch I felt like sitting out.

Secondly, this isn’t how a book club works and it isn’t how our #twilmclub should work! So, I suggest to you that every two weeks you suggest a film YOU want to see or a favourite you just need to share with the world! Sounds more fun, right?

We will be starting this Wed’s 18th July with The Big Lebowski! Let’s do this and let’s have fun!

Found this whilst I was rummaging around my hard drive yesterday. I think I posted a photo of it last year. I was intending on showing it properly when I finished it but it was it was just meant to be a quick exercise and it was taking too much time to complete. I reckon I got it to a stage where I’d learned what I aiming for though.

I mainly wanted to practice eye-balling colours instead of colour picking from originals, it was kind of refreshing to work with a really neutral colour pallet too. Speaking of which I really need to update the look of this blog sometime soon, the orange and blue burns my eyes when I look at it, bleugh!

Hey! Thought I’d upload _something_ seeing as I must seem pretty dormant at the moment. In actuality I’m not, honest! I’ve been working from the Mind Candy offices for a couple of months now on more Moshi Monsters stuff, unfortunately I can’t show any of it yet or mention what it is, boo! But I can show you some work from the very first project they commissioned me for last year which is definitely roaming about in open now! So here it is, a small selection of artwork from their ‘Mash Up’ trading card game.
